Shane was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA and was a Pittsburgh Central graduate. During his collegiate playing career he was a part of three championship teams in 2008 and 2009 with Xavier University. He pitched mostly out of the bullpen with key outings occurring against Kansas State in the 2009 Rice Regional. In the 2012 season, Shane transferred to Creighton University as a graduate transfer and appeared in 20 games including 8 starts for the Jays. His efforts helped the Jays to the Missouri Valley Conference Championship. Liska closed out the season with a 3-4 record and posted an impressive 3.27 ERA in 55.0 innings pitched while holding opponents to a .214 batting average with 54 strikeouts. Two of his three victories in 2012 came at critical times as Liska notched wins in the MVC Tournament (11-5 vs Illinois State) and the NCAA Tournament (8-2 vs San Diego).
Liska went on to serve as an assistant coach at Creighton and under his tutelage, four Jays earned MVC honors inlcluding sophomore Jake Peter who was invited to participate in a Team USA training camp, named an ABCA Second Team All-Region performer, and was a finalist for hthe John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year Award.
After his stint at Creighton, Shane was part of the University of Pittsburgh coaching staff as an assistant their first two seasons in the ACC. He was able to evaluate and witness first-hand what it takes to play at the highest level in college baseball.
